ABOUT US

Welcome to Panas Gurkha Restaurant, where tradition meets flavour. We invite you to experience the rich culinary heritage of Nepal and India, lovingly crafted with the freshest ingredients, bold spices, and time-honoured recipes. Just as Gurkhas are known for their strength and honour, we strive to earn your respect by serving food with integrity, prepared with heart, and delivered with care. When you dine with us, you are not just enjoying authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine, you are experiencing a small piece of Nepalese culture, history and pride.

Our Story

At Panas Gurkha, we take pride in bringing the authentic tastes of Nepal and India to Blackheath. Our name, Panas, symbolises the traditional Nepalese lamp, which is a beacon of warmth, hospitality, and togetherness. Founded in 2011, Panas Gurkha was born from our owner, Sujan Katuwal MBE. His passion for sharing the diverse flavours of his homeland, Nepal, inspired by family recipes and the spirit of the Gurkhas, who are known for their courage, honour, and dedication.

Our Philosophy

Nepal is a land of breathtaking mountains, rich traditions, and bold, diverse flavours. Yet, authentic Nepalese cuisine remains a hidden gem for many. Our goal is to change that. We believe great food starts with great ingredients. Our dishes are freshly prepared using locally sourced produce, high-quality meats, and carefully selected spices. Whether you’re discovering momo (Nepalese dumplings) for the first time or savouring your favourite curry, every dish reflects our commitment to authenticity and excellence, and our deep respect for tradition, family recipes, and the warm hospitality that Nepal is famous for.

Our Connection with the Gurkhas

Panas is a tribute to the legendary Gurkha soldiers, whose bravery, loyalty, and honour have earned global admiration. Their story is part of who we are. Courage, discipline, hospitality are the qualities that define the Gurkhas, and those qualities inspire how we run our restaurant every day. Every week, we have sessions with the ex-Gurkha community of Greenwich to help them with their PTSD, anxiety, loneliness and depression. Be it cooking classes, English classes, or yoga classes, we make sure that Gurkhas are included in everything that we do, and that is what Panas is all about.

Meet the Chefs

Behind every dish at Panas Gurkha is a story of dedication, creativity, and heritage. Our award-winning culinary team blends generations of Nepalese cooking traditions with modern techniques to deliver dishes that are as beautifully presented as they are delicious. Guided and inspired by world-renowned chefs, including twice Michelin-starred Chef Atul Kochhar, our team continuously refines its craft while staying true to the heart of Nepalese cuisine. From the precise balance of spices to the artful plating, our chefs pour their passion and skill into every plate, ensuring your dining experience is authentic, memorable, and truly unique.

Our Commitment to Giving Back

At Panas Gurkha, we believe great food should nourish more than just the body. It should strengthen communities and uplift those in need. That’s why, for over five years, we’ve proudly supported weekly food drives for the homeless in partnership with Woolwich Service Users Project (WSUP) in Woolwich, offering free meals every Tuesday. This initiative began during the difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since become part of who we are. Inspired by the global Giving Tuesday movement, we’ve now set ourselves an ambitious goal: to help deliver 10 million free meals to vulnerable people across the UK. For us, hospitality isn’t just what happens inside our restaurant, it’s a responsibility we carry beyond our doors.
